What was that phrase? “Cover her face, mine eyes dazzle?” Only I think it was about a murder, and the only thing I’m killing today is my eyesight (oh Astigmatism, where is thy sting?). It started innocently enough, I checked my email and then went through my Amazon pages and I noticed something quite puzzling, and across two countries!
My book, The Gilty Party, has been categorized in both Horror and Paranormal Romance, and I had no idea how they got there. I mean, I’m learning the ropes of this business as I go, which means I make mistakes like it’s someone else’s business, but I am still not quite sure where Booktopia got the idea that a fantastical mystery has to include kissing. (No problem if other books do, but mine does not.)
Sadly, they won’t change it either. When I contacted them, they said I had to talk to my distributor. When I talked to *those* guys, they said I had to talk to the store. So, I’m just left squinting at the screen and trying to figure out how to get Australia to listen to me. Anyone have any thoughts?
In Amazon news, I’m somehow in both Horror and Horror parody. I can’t do horror! The absolute abysmal quality of special effects needed in a movie to allow me to watch a horror film would make a true afficionado go pale with outrage. I flinch at gore, I can’t watch those surgery shows. It’s just not in me!
I finally narrowed it down to my use of the word “occult” because there are alchemists in my books. I think I need to return to thesaurus.com for help on that one! But, in better news, after some judicious use of the help button and some google-fu which led me to Dave Gaughran’s website, I have informed the appropriate help desk and put in a request to change my categories.
It makes me feel accomplished to get something like that done. I don’t want readers to have the wrong impression, and I especially don’t want someone to feel cheated because the categories I was in didn’t match the actual contents of my story. Hopefully, this will all be fixed soon! Right now, I’m filing it under my learning curve in this business. I’ll figure it out someday, but for right now, if you found me through the horror genre, I’m very sorry you had to find out about how much of a scaredy cat I am this way.
I hope you all out there are having a good day, regardless. <3
